Drexel beats Penn on the floor — and with rollouts

big 5 logoDick Jerardi of the Daily News reports that both Penn and Drexel played hard last night. And clearly, both teams are banged up. There were no style points given out at the P — for that matter, there were very few points, period. They somehow combined to go 0-for-19 from the arc. Drexel was 10-for-22 from the line. And Penn had more turnovers (18) than field goals (17). End result? The Dragons won, 58-49, before an announced crowd of 4,308. It’s Drexel’s third straight win in the Battle for 33rd Street.

Here’s a portion of Jerardi’s take:

It was not a good sign when the Dragons were shooting 53.3 percent early in the second half and leading by just eight points. Drexel just does not shoot that well for an entire game. The Dragons promptly missed their next six shots and Penn closed to 37-35 with 11 minutes left.

Jamie Harris had a career-high 22 points for the Dragons, who failed to make a 3-pointer for the first time since Feb, 14, 1992 — a span of 520 games. Evan Neisler had 10 points and 10 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end. Jack Eggleston (10 points, 11 rebounds) and Mike Howlett (10 points, 13 rebounds) both notched double-doubles for the Quakers — and that’s two straight double-doubles for Howlett, a 6-9, 215-pound sophomore.

Tyler Bernardini (right foot) and Andreas Schreiber (shoulder) didn’t play for Penn. And Jerardi says Leon Spencer is out for two months for Drexel with a broken wrist.

You want a highlight? How about this: Jerardi reports that a rollout held by the Penn students said, “Drexel can you read this? Drexel, can you read anything?” The Drexel students, however, had an answer at the ready: “A.J. Drexel, the man who made Wall Street. Wharton grads, the men who destroyed it.”

Zing!

Drexel (1-3) next plays Friday afternoon at the DAC against Toledo in the Legends Classic. Penn (0-4) is off until Dec. 4, when it visits Navy.
