Temple to host Ball State, Drexel visits Penn
Two games tonight involving three city teams. We’ll break ‘em down for ya after the jump.
* Penn (0-3) and Drexel (0-3) meet in their annual University City Battle, this time at the Palestra. Last year, the Dragons won, 66-64, up the street at the DAC in an early morning affair that was part of ESPN’s 24-hour marathon. These neighborly rivals have played every year since 1996-97, and while the Quakers lead the all-time series, 15-6, Drexel has won the last two. Both teams are winless and struggling: Drexel can’t shoot, which is a reprise of last year, and Penn blew a big lead Saturday against Delaware. The Daily Pennsylvanian reports today that Andreas Schreiber and Tyler Bernardini will sit this one out because of injuries; neither had played Saturday, either. The Comcast Network (formerly CN8) will televise it, and it tips at 7.
* Your Temple Owls (2-1) host Ball State (2-0) in one of those Mid-American Conference games the Owls are obligated to play because their football team joined that league after being booted from the Big East. Temple looked good in a tough win against Siena at the Liacouras on Saturday night. Senior guard Ryan Brooks is averaging 15.3 points, and junior forward Lavoy Allen is averaging 12 boards. Ball State has wins over Valparaiso (88-78) and Division II Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (57-47). 6-9 sophomore Jarrod Jones averages 19 points per game, while 6-2 freshman Jauwan Scaife is scoring at a clip of 13.0 per night. According to The Star-Press of Muncie (Ind.), SIUE played a 2-3 zone and frustrated the Cardinals into shooting from the perimeter, and they made just 33 percent of their shots. Temple, of course, doesn’t play much zone. But the Owls’ frontcourt could get tested. Tipoff is at 7:30.
