Saint Joe’s succumbs to ‘mental challenge’ in loss to DePaul

st joes logoThe Hawks managed just 51 points in a 58-51 loss to DePaul in the Paradise Jam’s third-place game last night in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. The defeat prompted head Hawk Phil Martelli to say, “Today was a mental challenge,” according to the Daily News. He went on to say the Hawks’ troubles are “without an easy fix.”

Though it trailed by 10 at the half, Saint Joe’s was even with the Blue Demons at 51-51 with 1:50 to play in the game. Carl Jones and Idris Hilliard then missed shots after DePaul re-took the lead, and that was it.

Neither team shot well: 37.8 percent for Saint Joe’s, 38.9 percent for DePaul (3-1). They also combined to make just 12 of 45 from the arc (26.7 percent). The offensive woes that were thought to be such a concern for Saint Joe’s are starting to surface, and just a few days after that promising, 84-point performance against Boston College: Darrin Govens scored 16 and Garrett Williamson had 10, but no else reached double figures.

Saint Joe’s (3-2) is off until next Monday, when it plays Rider across the river in Lawrenceville, N.J.
