La Salle wins ‘worst’ game
The Explorers beat Tulane, 61-59, yesterday to earn fifth place in the eight-team Charleston Classic, but coach John Giannini nonetheless called it La Salle’s worst game of the year, according to the Daily News:
“We missed free throws, we gave up two baskets off not boxing out on free throws, and we had some miscommunications that allowed them to have open shots. We had some guys who had off-nights. We were still able to win against a quality team. I think that bodes well for us.”
They did win, after all. And if there’s an additional positive to take from this, it’s that La Salle often lost games like this a year ago, with similar mistakes eventually spelling doom for them. But this time, Rodney Green made all four of his free-throw attempts in the final 47 seconds. This time, Yves Mekongo’s two misses from the line — he was 0-for-7 overall — with 17.7 seconds to go weren’t fatal. This time, Kevin Sims’ game-winning 3-pointer for Tulane (1-3) didn’t fall.
La Salle had a 39-27 rebounding advantage even though Aaric Murray had just six points and three boards. The Explorers held the Green Wave to 35.7 percent shooting after halftime. And they won even though they made just 12 of 21 foul shots.
But they did win. And they’re 3-1. Next up is Villanova out on the Main Line on Saturday afternoon.

I listened to this game. Coach should fess up to some ‘worst’ coaching too. LaSalle had the ball with 20 or so seconds left and had to make an in-bounds. Coach knows whoever gets the inbound will be fouled. THe play has Yves Mekongo get the inbound pass and he is fouled. Why Yves? Up until that point, Yves was having a bad game and was 0 for 5 from the foul line. Sure enough, Yves misses both free throws!. Tulane gets the rebound and almost scores.
