Villanova, Saint Joe’s to play tonight

big5The Wildcats plays Mississippi in the title game of the O’Reilly Auto Parts Puerto Rico Tip-Off, while the Hawks gets No. 7 Purdue in the semifinals of the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. We know, we know: We told you Saint Joe’s-Purdue was last night. But we were wrong. Don’t hold it against us. More after the jump.

* In Ole Miss, ‘Nova (4-0) gets a team that is also 4-0, and the Rebels’ two wins down in San Juan have come against Indiana (89-71) and Kansas State (86-74). Former Cincinnati coach Andy Kennedy is Ole Miss’ coach, and the Rebels returned two starters from a team that went 16-15 last year. VUhoops.com has a rather comprehensive preview here. From the looks of things, Ole Miss is not especially strong up front, so you’d have to figure that plays into ‘Nova’s strength, since the ‘Cats’ have such a good, deep, backcourt. If you’re not into watching Eagles-Bears tonight, this game tips at 8 and is on ESPN2.

* We apologize for getting the actual date on Saint Joe’s-Purdue wrong, but to make it up to you, we’re providing this excellent notebook from the West Lafayette (Ind.) Journal & Courier, which includes some praise for Purdue from Hawks (3-0) coach Phil Martelli, plus a look at how much the No. 7 Boilermakers (2-0) actually struggled in their wins over Cal-State Northridge and South Dakota State, particularly with how many fouls (54) they committed in the two games. And here’s a rather in-depth preview courtesy of ESPN.com. Don’t say we didn’t try. Hawks-Boilers tips at 8:30. And it’s tonight. We promise.
