Missed free throws, blown lead for Penn against Delaware (updated)

penn logoHere’s how ugly it was last night in the first game of the season at the P-spot: Penn and Delaware combined to shoot less than 50 percent (16-for-34) from the line over the course of two overtimes. And they shot 92 free throws total for the game.

92!

Oh, and Penn led by as many as 18 in the first half and by eight with a little less than six minutes to play in regulation, but the Quakers somehow still lost, 97-94, in two OTs.

Granted, Penn was without injured starters Tyler Bernardini and Andreas Schreiber, but still: They Quakers shot 58.3 percent in the first half. They made six 3-pointers. And they made all six of those 3s in a span on six minutes.

And then…

Delaware started making shots. Saint Joe’s transfer Jawan Carter scored a career-high 35 points, and even though he missed a 3 at the end of regulation with Penn ahead by 2, Hakim McCullar was there to grab the rebound and put it in to tie the game and send it to OT. It was Carter, Alphonso Dawson (28 points) and D.J. Boney who made 3s late in the second half to bring the Blue Hens (1-2) back. Carter, who played 48 out of a possible 50 minutes, was 19 of 26 from the line. Yes, 26 attempts. By one player. In one game.

Zack Rosen led Penn with 25 points (including 10 of 11 from the line), but he fouled out late in the first overtime. Rob Belcore (nine points) and Darren Smith (17) also fouled out. And while Jack Eggleston had 19 points, he was called for a charge as he put in a shot in the lane with 5.8 seconds left in the second OT that would have tied it, according to The Inquirer. Quakers sophomore Mike Howlett did score 14 points and grab 14 rebounds, so there’s that, if good news is more your bag.

Penn (0-3) plays 0-3 Drexel on Tuesday night at the P.

UPDATE: Berndardini was seen walking on crutches and with a boot on his foot at Thursday’s practice, according to the Daily Pennsylvanian, though Quakers coach Glen Miller described him as “day-to-day.”
