La Salle gets balance to get by Davidson
OK, so this isn’t the Davidson that was the NCAA tournament’s darlings two years ago and the sport’s national TV regulars from last season. Stephen Curry, after all, has taken his high-wire act to the NBA’s Golden State Warriors.
Davidson still likes to launch 3s, but the Wildcats made just 10 of 27 against La Salle in the loser’s bracket of the Charleston Classic last night in Charleston, S.C. And the Explorers got double figures from five different players and won handily, 84-70. Rodney Green scored 21 points, but he also had a career-high 10 rebounds and he moved into 21st on the school’s all-time scoring list (1,427 points), with only four to go to pass the great Larry Cannon (1,430) for 20th.
Yves Mekongo had 17 points and was 11-for-12 from the line. Aaric Murray had 14 points, five rebounds and two blocks; he was 7-for-10 from the field. Kimmani Barrett had 13 points, Ruben Guillandeaux 11, and La Salle made 30 of its 55 shots (54.5 percent). And the Williams twins apparently played solid defense in a combined 32 minutes.
La Salle (2-1) plays Tulane (1-2) tomorrow at 12:30 in the tournament’s fifth-place game.
