Was Armwood on the line in ‘Nova’s win?
Not that it matters now, but it does appear that Villanova freshman Isaiah Armwood’s foot might have been on the line as he shot that game-winning 3-pointer to beat George Mason yesterday at the O’Reilly Auto Parts Puerto Rico Tip-Off. It was the first and only shot of the game Armwood took, and it was definitely not the shot coach Jay Wright wanted in that spot, according to the Associated Press.
We mentioned immediately afterward that this one was ugly, and here’s more proof: The Wildcats shot just 35.8 percent overall and 32 percent from the arc, and Scottie Reynolds turned it over eight times. All told, there were 54 fouls called. And yet, freshman Maalik Wayns hit a 3 when the ‘Cats were down four in the final minute, and then Armwood went ahead and did what he did.
‘Nova is 3-0 heading into today’s 3 p.m. date with Dayton down in San Juan, which can be seen on ESPNU.
UPDATE: We just looked at the play-by-play from down the stretch and couldn’t help but notice George Mason missed 4 of 8 free throws in the final 1:16. Which is pretty much a great example of how to blow a game.
