Four city teams in action today/tonight
Villanova, Saint Joe’s, La Salle and Drexel all play today. Let’s get to it.
* ‘Nova, ranked No. 5/6 but lucky to have gotten past George Mason yesterday at the O’Reilly Auto Parts Puerto-Rico Tip-Off, gets a much trickier challenge today at 3. The ‘Cats (3-0) play No. 18/21 Dayton, which defeated No. 21/19 Georgia Tech, 63-59, in the Tip-Off’s first round Thursday. The Flyers (2-0), who are favored to win the Atlantic 10 this season, got seven points in the final minute from sophomore guard Paul Williams. They also got 19 from another sophomore, Chris Johnson, who was 4-for-8 from the arc. Their bench accounted for 47 points. This should be a good one. And it will be broadcast on ESPNU.
* Saint Joe’s (2-0) plays Boston College (2-0) in the first round of the Paradise Jam at St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Tipoff is at 6. BC’s two wins have come against Dartmouth (89-58) and St. Francis, N.Y., (72-44). Tyler Roche, who scored 30 against Dartmouth, is the Eagles’ lone senior. And it looks like BC was a bit careless with the ball in its blowout of St. Francis, according to the Boston Globe. If the Hawks win, they’ll likely play No. 7 Purdue on Sunday. Should they lose, they’ll likely get South Dakota State tomorrow. East Carolina-Tennessee and DePaul-Northern Iowa are the other two first-round matchups today. The complete bracket can be found here.
* La Salle (1-1) meets Davidson (0-2) in the loser’s bracket of the Charleston Classic, with tip-off coming at 7. And yes, Stephen Curry no longer plays at Davidson, which lost to South Florida, 65-58, on Thursday.
* And Drexel (0-2) heads up the Jersey Turnpike to play Rutgers (1-0), which has a win over Marist. The Scarlet Knights, coached by former Villanova assistant Fred Hill, are one of the lowest-ranked teams in Division I even though they play in the Big East. That said, Drexel’s actually ranked lower by the Pomeroy Ratings, so read into that what you will.
