Freshman Jones lifts Saint Joe’s past Holy Cross
Hawks fans, say hello to Carl Jones. The 5-11, 155-pound freshman came off the bench and scored the last six points in the final two minutes of a tight ballgame last night at the Hagan, and as a result Saint Joe’s escaped with a 69-67 victory over Holy Cross. Jones played 25 minutes finished with 18 points to lead all scorers, and he played with a ton of swagger, according to Dick Jerardi’s story in the Daily News. And Ray Parillo of The Inquirer likened Jones’ small frame to that of a middle schooler — even though Jones said he’s actually gained nine pounds since arriving on Hawk Hill.
This was by no means a perfect win for Saint Joe’s, however. Holy Cross had a holy-crap-can-that-be-right 50-33 rebounding edge, including an astounding 22 offensive boards. And Darrin Govens again struggled from the perimeter, going just 3-for-14, while Garrett Williamson took just six shots and finished with seven points. Sophomore center Todd O’Brien did have 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Chris Prescott — who has started both games — had nine points in 23 minutes. All told, nine Hawks players scored
Now 2-0, Saint Joe’s next plays Boston College on Friday in the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
