Temple opens by cruising past Delaware
The Owls took a short ride down I-95 yesterday, and they had no trouble handling Delaware, 76-56. Ryan Brooks scored 23 points, Juan Fernandez had 14 points and five assists, and Lavoy Allen hauled in 11 rebounds, according to this story in The Inquirer. Brooks also had nine rebounds.
Defensively, Temple limited Delaware to 33.3 percent shooting, with Saint Joe’s transfer Jawan Carter (17 points) being the only Blue Hen to score in double figures. According to the News-Journal of Wilmington (Del.), the Blue Hens, who were 13-19 last year, are rather short on experience. Four freshmen, in fact, played significant minutes. And Delaware, which is coached by former Saint Joe’s assistant Monte Ross, was picked to finish 11th in the 12-team Colonial Athletic Association, which is the league in which Drexel plays.
One sort-of worrisome item for the Owls: Junior forward Craig Williams, who scored eight points, left the game midway through the second half with what The Inquirer described as a “mild sprain” to his right knee. He did not return.
Temple (1-0) plays at Georgetown on Tuesday afternoon at 4 as part of that ESPN 24-hour marathon.
