Catching up on this ‘n that
It’s summertime, and the livin’s easy, as Gershwin once wrote. Here’s a quick roundup of some recent Big 5 happenings…
* The Big East last week released its schedule of opponents for the 2009-2010 slate, and Your Villanova Wildcats are looking at home games against Connecticut, DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Notre Dame, Providence, Seton Hall, South Florida and West Virginia. They’ll take to the road to face Cincinnati, Georgetown, Louisville, Marquette, Pitt, Rutgers, St. John’s, Syracuse and West Virginia. That means they get West Virginia — the league’s other early favorite — Georgetown and Marquette twice, and everybody else once. ESPN’s Andy Katz has already declared it the toughest slate of any Big East team, based on the early projections. We shall see. The dates for next season’s games have not yet been determined.
* Penn’s Zack Rosen, the Big 5 rookie of the year last season, will be playing for the U.S. at the Maccabiah Games (aka the Jewish Olympics) later this month. Tennessee’s Bruce Pearl is the U.S. coach, and one of his assistants will be La Salle assistant Harris Adler.
* Former Temple guard Chris Clark, who was outstanding in the Owls’ run to the 2008 NCAA tournament, has been hired as an assistant coach at Saint Francis (Pa.) in Loretto.
* Former Drexel standout Robert Battle, who has played professionally overseas since graduating in 2003, has been invited to play for the Sacramento Kings in the NBA’s summer league.
* If you’re reading this, you’re no doubt well aware that Villanova has a pretty swell recruiting class coming to the Main Line this fall. So let’s reiterate it by linking to this post by Rise and Fire, which we saw via The House That Glanville Built. Rise and Fire, we should also add, has Your Wildcats ranked No. 6 heading into next season, oh by the way.
