How bad are things at Penn right now?
We interrupt this conference tournament craziness to ask that question because The Daily Pennsylvanian’s report that Quakers sophomore guard Harrison Gaines wants to transfer is pretty damning.
Here’s the skinny straight from the student paper’s report:
Gaines doesn’t know where he’ll play next year, although he does want the school to have good academics, not to mention “a fast-paced, inclusive basketball program.”
Perhaps most tellingly, Gaines said “I need to attend a school where I have confidence in the basketball team’s leaders.”
Um, like, whoa. We can’t help but think that Gaines’ comment is aimed squarely at Quakers coach Glen Miller, who has gone 23-36 in the last two seasons after winning the Ivy in 2007 with many of former coach Fran Dunphy’s recruits. Gaines is also the second sophomore (after Remy Cofield) to seek a transfer in this season alone. And then there’s this take from E. James Beale’s blog at City Paper:
Ask Penn alum from a generation ago about the Palestra and they’ll tell tales of never seeing it empty and their attempts to catch every Big 5 matchup, no matter who was involved. Now it has become rare to see the most historic college gym in the nation filled to capacity.
Now, I’m not calling for Miller’s head: He came in with an impressive resume of turning teams around (something a critic might point out he’s already kinda added to) and has brought in young players who he believes in and plays, just pointing out that if you feel anything about Penn basketball right now it’s probably anger — but that you probably don’t.
To which we can only add … hmmm.
