The RPI has been killed

Ken Pomeroy had been presenting the RPI (or Ratings Percentage Index) for several years so hoops geeks (ahem) could track the relative strengths and weaknesses of given teams. The NCAA’s Selection Committee has long used the RPI as a barometer for seeding teams in the field of 65, but Pomeroy is now into “team evaluation” and “predicting future performance,” both of which he says are not accurately reflected by the RPI.

(Actually, Pomeroy was into this several weeks ago but BIG FIVE POST just launched so we’re only getting around to telling you about it now.)

(“Predicting future performance,” eh? I wonder if Pomeroy knows whether the Steelers will cover this week, or if the NFL’s officials have anything else to say about the matter. OK, enough.)

Anyway, here’s another link to RPI rankings — and in real time, no less. Pomeroy still does his daily ratings of teams, with his site also including references to past RPIs. I’ve added both to the links on the right column of my main page so you folks can see where your team stands throughout the season.

You know you’re already concerned about who’s on the bubble.

The RPI Rankings on that page don’t seem to work. For some reason, they only have Temple as 1-1. I guess beating College of Charleston really doesn’t matter.
